Violet Sorrengail always expected a quiet future among books, records, and history in the Scribe Quadrant. But when her mother, the commanding general of Navarre, orders her into the deadly Riders Quadrant instead, Violet is forced to compete with hundreds of candidates for a place among the kingdom’s most elite warriors: dragon riders.
There is only one problem — Violet was never built for this world.
Smaller and more fragile than the other cadets, she enters a brutal war college where weakness is a death sentence and dragons do not tolerate those they deem unworthy. With fewer dragons than candidates, some students would kill her to improve their own odds. Others want her dead simply because of who her mother is — including Xaden Riorson, the ruthless and powerful wingleader with every reason to hate her.
Survival will take more than strength. Violet will have to rely on her intelligence, instincts, and every advantage she can find just to make it through each day.
But beyond the walls of Basgiath War College, the war is growing worse. The kingdom’s defenses are weakening, the death toll is rising, and Violet begins to suspect that the people in power are hiding a dangerous truth.
At Basgiath, everyone has secrets. Friends, enemies, and lovers all have their own motives — and once you enter the Riders Quadrant, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.
