San Francisco, 1958
Frank Valentine, a struggling jazz musician and youth of the Beat Generation, finds his life shattered after a brutal midnight beating leaves his left hand permanently paralyzed. Jobless, penniless, and desperate, Frank agrees to join his best friend, George, and three other men in a dangerous venture to work for a notorious gangster, hoping for a quick payday.
What Frank doesn’t know is that George has far more dangerous plans in mind.
Unfamiliar with the criminal world, Frank is soon pulled deeper into the underbelly of San Francisco’s gangsters, junkies, and hitmen. As if things weren’t complicated enough, Frank finds himself drawn to a mysterious dark-haired woman, whose connection to the chaos around him is more unsettling than he could have imagined.
When it becomes clear that a powerful crime syndicate is gunning for him, Frank begins to understand that the road out of his personal purgatory may be a one-way trip straight to hell.
